Problems with Sony thermostats for Pecan Street Project?
by Cynthia on July 18th, 2012

New thermostats were installed in our house as part of the Pecan Street Project. I noticed immediately after that the stairwell and second floor were much warmer and more humid. Since the new thermostats don't have the tool that measures humidity, like the old ones did, I bought thermometers that do that and have been taking measures over the past week. The new thermometers confirm that the second floor runs 3- 5 degrees hotter with the thermostat set the same as we used to, and the humidity has been 68 - 75%, higher than before. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to fix it? Would love to cool down and dry out in my nice expensive Mueller house. :-)

Cynthia,

I would be happy to take a look at the thermostats installed. There is a calibration menu on the thermostats that allows you to fine-tune the temperature.

I will PM you for details.

Thanks,
Grant

Yea, I'm having the same issue. I haven't collected data like you have, but have noticed temperature and humidity changes in my home.

My only thought would be that the new thermostats use a positive swing differential to adjust the temperature, and that might be causing the difference in comfort.

A positive swing is when your thermostat starts running above the pre-set temperature. For example, if your home is set for 78 degrees (with a 1.5 degree swing differential), the AC will not turn on until your home reaches 79.5 degrees. It will then cool your home back to 78 degrees.

Possibly the Honeywells had a negative swing differential (where they would cool your home to 76.5 if you were set to 78, and start cooling again at 78).

You can modify the swing differential or calibrate the unit in the menu screen. I would be happy to stop by and show you where this is.

Thanks,
Grant

Kevin,

If there is a physical problem with your thermostat (the disconnect between the fan and compressor), I will have our HVAC out today to see what is going on. I am always available to stop by and see what is going on as well.

I will send you an email shortly.

Thanks,
Grant

Another housewith the same issues on the Pecan St. Proj Thermostats happening here. I haven't collected the info however we have noticed temperature and humidity changes. To make matters worse simply programming the temp and the user interface is quite difficult. Going away for a few days and want to change the programming requires way too much time. Sony has been response via email and I have provided feedback to them and suggest you do the same. Not going another summer with these units and will follow up with Grant. - Eric

That is too bad. Our thermostat is working great. We mostly use the Internet to program. Do you have big swings in temp? Or is this an all the time thing?
