The problem with taking your bike on the bus...
by Grace on August 1st, 2011

... is that each bus can only carry two bikes. I'm not sure how many people this affects, but this morning I was trying to catch the #20 heading toward downtown on Manor (over by the big spider) and the first bus had both of its bike racks full ... so I waited another 20 minutes for the next bus, which was also full. I gave up my environmentally-friendly intentions and had to go home to get other transportation. My boss *does* expect me to show up at work eventually.

I sent a short email to customer service at CapMetro letting them know the route, which direction I was travelling, what stop I was waiting at, and the times the bus's bike racks were full. They very much appreciated the information, so if it ever happens to you, they'd like to hear about it. This was the response I received a few minutes ago:

"Thank you for your extreme patience, and thank you for providing us with this information!
Last February, the Board directed a change from 2-Bike racks to 3-Bike racks on buses, as one way to reduce the incidences of this very situation. Not budgeted in this fiscal year, they will start being incorporated into service this coming fiscal year, on new buses and when racks are being replaced. This will help, but it also helps to have the information that you have provided here -- the time, place, route – as we are periodically adjusting schedules to account for a number of things – bike rack capacity being one of them! I will provide your information to the route schedulers.

More and more people are using their bikes to get to/from the bus – we want to do our best to make whatever changes we can to improve the predictability of services. Thank you so much for providing us with this information, and I hope you will continue to ride Capital Metro. I promise we’ll do our best to improve services for cyclists like you ride the bus and train!"

Who knows if increasing the capacity by one will make much of a difference.

Couldn't they get much more detailed information than from random customers by asking their drivers to notate the time/stop/route when the bus rack is full?

Well ... that makes an awful lot of sense.

Grace,
I have (in years gone by before I got to work from home) taken my bike on the bus inside. I know they used to allow this when the rack was full.

Obviously the current heat is an issue, but I would encourage fellow Muellerites (Muellerians? Muellericans?) to ride their bikes downtown. I do this quite a bit and I've found it to be a safe and easy ride.
