And just what did he suggest, or are we on our own?

Didn't hear a specific recommendation

Beware: Whirlpool Oven Auto Clean Feature

Looking back at this thread I will throw in my 2 cents worth. There should be a cut out in the bottom of the oven cabinet in the Meritage homes. You can feel it from inside the drawer below. If you do self clean, always open this drawer. This model does have a terrible history of overheating while cleaning. Unfortunately we found out after the warranty expired. If it goes out it will still have electricity coming to the unit, but it will not heat up. For the do-it-yourselfer, the cause is a thermal overheat device(like a circuit breaker for heat) on the back of the oven. Your oven instruction book shows how to remove the oven(also online) Part is available at Whirlpool repair places and will take about 15 minutes to do the entire job.

Here's what we found:
- thermal fuse replacement did not fix it
- factory authorized fix rotated the fuse 180 degrees - did not fix it
- new fuse and an upgraded blower did appear to fix it and the warranty only covered the fan, not the $120 service charge
- failures occurred with drawer open-
- all this with a properly installed oven
- that's when we went to Meritage

I guess I should have said that ours is fixed as far as the oven working, but we don't intend to use the self cleaning again.
