After using the auto clean feature on my Whirlpool gas oven for the first time, the oven will not heat up. It must have blown a fuse. It also created a horrible smell and set off my smoke alarm. It wasn't even that dirty since I usually use "Easy Off" oven cleaner. What possessed me to push that button yesterday I have no idea. So unless you are within your one-year warranty, I wouldn't suggest trying that out.

This is a known factory defect. We had the same problem and after fighting with Whirlpool corporate we asked Meritage to intervene and immediately received a replacement oven from Whirlpool - out of warranty, no charge.
We had the same thing happen, fortunately under warranty. The technician who came to replace the heater element said he thought it was improperly vented within the cabinetry, causing the element to malfunction. We bought an extended warranty after that, which is now coming to an end.
I have Easy Off scheduled to help me out this weekend and from now on.

Who was the builder that improperly vented your oven? I've suspected that ours has venting issues.
We had the same problem with our Meritage-installed Whirlpool, fortunately while still under warranty. The repairman said they don't vent properly and he did something to help it, but said it might not work. He also said it sometimes helps to open the drawer beneath the oven while cleaning, and if you do, you can feel significant hot air venting.
One lesson - try the cleaning function before the warranty is up.
I don't know if this is related, but I also am in a Meritage and my whirlpool oven is malfunctioning. I never use the self-cleaning feature, but over the weekend I went to use my oven and it seemed to preheat rather quickly. I put my food in and within a minute or two I could tell something was wrong because the whole house was beginning to smell like what I was cooking (sweet potatoes). I went to look at the oven and it said LOCKED. I turned the oven off and googled "Locked Whirlpool oven" and sure enough lots of people have had the same issue. I basically had to wait for the temperature to cool down before I could open it and get my black potatoes out. Silly me, I thought maybe it was a fluke and tried again last night. I got the same results.
danx111 - did you call whirlpool directly or go through an oven repair technician? Just wondering who to call first?

Thanks in advance for the help.
Whirlpool blew me off (CEO) so I sent note to Meritage Hqtrs and recommended they stop using Whirlpool. Next day Whirlpool called and offered me a new oven - way out of warranty - no charge Dan 323-5411
One of the home inspectors I work with - Glen Davis - told me to avoid the self-clean function on ovens in general. He frequently observes issues after the self-clean. Though he's never mentioned burnt potatoes.

Repair tech said if you don't use self-clean and need to clean the oven you need to find a cleaner made for these ovens
