Group Discount for Fence Staining

Hi Everybody,

I'm going to get my fence stained by someone who did a neighbor's fence (and it looks great!). A few of my friends/neighbors have said that they also want to get their fence stained so I started thinking... I can probably get a discount if I can get even more people in Mueller to hire the same guy.

Right now the cost is $200 for labor (you buy the stain) but I'm thinking he might come down on that price. For those who have lived in their house for over 1 year, he does power washing to prepare the fence for staining. That was quoted at $100 for my house but again, we might be able to get a deal if a group of us hire him.

Wow - so far 8 people have contacted me. That's great. I'll give it a few more days to see who else is interested and then I'll contact the painter to see what kind of deal we can get.

We now have around 25 people interested so I called Moises and he offered a fantastic deal!!

This is for LABOR ONLY - you must buy your own stain

PRICES
(for most yards - corner lots may cost a little more)

Power Washing & Staining: $225
Staining Only: $150

Payable by cash or check.

If you're interested, call Moises at (512) 576-1212.

He will come out and tell you how many gallons of stain to buy and discuss whether to get oil-based stain or not. Oil-based will last longer but is a little more expensive.

Happy fence staining everyone!

Lorrie, As your garden variety nosey neighbor, I'm curious about your use of the word 'stain'. While stain makes the fence look better, it does nothing to protect it from the elements. Our fences are constructed from wood that is pretty porous and will deteriorate sooner rather than later. I suggest you talk with your vendor about products that will protect your fence as well as make it look better.

Bobby,
I was planning to use this stuff: http://www.arcat.com/clients/sikkens.pdf
This was recommended by a neighbor who does woodworking/remodels for a living and that's what he used on his fence.

Let me know if you've heard anything bad about it. I'm scheduled to get my fence stained this Wednesday so I still have time to get something else.

Thanks!

Behr Deck Plus Solid Color Deck, Fence & Siding sold at Home Depot is the top rated product by Consumer Reports. I believe the issue that covered that was June 2010. There info is kinda hard to tap into for free on the internet. Their yearly discussion and tests on these always point out that in a a tough weather environment like Texas that a couple of years is all you should expect even out of a top performer. Atter that expect flaking and color loss to start. Note that the top performer is a "solid" and even though it is a stain you will get more of a "painted " look. I used their semi-transparent last year for the fence, porch railings, and the balcony woodwork. The one place that has worn in the last year was the deck flooring on the balcony that receives direct sun for most of the day every day.

Lorrie, I'm not familiar with the product you mention. I use TWP - Total Wood Preservative. It was recommended some years ago by a company that deals in cedar products because it blocks out UV light, and it's the UV light that causes wood to turn gray. It rather expensive, but is available in various local hardware or paint stores. I don't know if Home Depot carries it. It is transparent, so it does not look "painted."

And I agree with eager ... whatever you use probably needs re-doing every other year.
