Dog skirmish on Tom Miller -- looking for owners!
by gourichikka on September 12th, 2010

To the couple who own the black and white pit bull that got off leash and attacked my dog this evening just before 8pm on Tom Miller very close to Zach Scott:

In the drama of the moment and my haste to get my dog home to check her out thoroughly, I did not ask for your names or contact info. My dog is ok, but she does have several puncture wounds that had to be drained and treated at the vet hospital, and they sent me home with pain killers and antibiotics. You seemed like nice people, notwithstanding the dog incident, and I would really appreciate your help with the vet bill and confirmation that your dog's vaccinations are current. Please call me or send a message if you see this post.

And if anyone who witnessed the incident knows who the dog owners are (they may not live in Mueller), please let me know, or let them know I'm trying to find them.

Thanks,
Gouri

That dog owner is not a Mueller resident in all likelihood. Pit bulls are explicitly forbidden by the covenants we signed when closing.

Please report this incident to Animal Control and Jennifer Harvey if you haven't already done so.

Hope the little one is OK. One of my dogs also got attacked by another dog a year ago in front of my house. It is not a good feeling.

How can dogs so easy to get off the leash? Are they actually on leash at that time? What type of leash are they using, I hope it is not the retrackable one. It is the responsibility of the owner to have control of their dogs at all times, especially when you knew you have a aggressive dog. We had young kids, toddlers running around in the neighbourhood and accident is waiting to happen. Lately, I saw several occasions that dogs are off leash running with their owners along Tom Miller. At one time, I have to argue with another dog owner in front of the swimming pool about his off-leash dog.

To all the dog owners, please treat your dogs as animals, they are not human.

I came up on this incident last night as I was jogging on the trail. When I got to where the dogs had been fighting, the couple with the pit bull (or pit bull mix?) had just started pulling him off the other one. After things stabilized, I asked them why this kind of dog was off its leash, and they said it had pulled some part of the leash apart and ran away from them. I didn't really understand how this could happen since it was a steel chain leash with pretty thick links, but apparently something wasn't fastened properly.

The couple with the pit bull seemed very apologetic and were appropriately physical and vocal in chastising their dog. They said they were shocked because this was the first time he had ever attacked any other dog. Even so, the victim dog was lucky to make it out alive. I wondered what would happen if a smaller dog or a child had been the target of this attack. I did ask the owners to please make sure this dog was fully secured before being taken out for a walk again.

Since the other dog's owner was still there, I didn't see it as my place to ask for any contact info. The couple walking him were probably 50s or early 60s and white (i.e., not what I would call your typical pit bull owners), and the dog had a blue aluminum bone-shaped tag. I'd suggest everyone keep an eye out for him and steer your pets and kids in another direction.

Thank you for posting this description of the attacking dog and owners, so people can look out for them. I did not really register much, as it all happened so fast and then I was focused on my own dog. I realize now that a dog fight is like a car accident -- you gotta exchange info. I was too discombobulated.

My dog was attacked by that dog just before this incident. I got the owners info and have given it to Gouri, who will contact them and make a report. I plan tol make one also.

Thank you, jckt. As someone who has been attached by an off-leash dog "that wouldn't harm anyone," I appreciate your post.

To all dog owners: leash laws exist for a reason. Please use one, and use one that is appropriate.

not knowing our policy on dogs since I'm not a dog owner...just silly question -

are all dogs here required to wear a leash? I see dogs running around all the time by Lake Park that are not on a leash and haven't said anything yet since I didn't know if there are certain areas where they aren't required to wear one?
