Is the morning bus for LASA too early?
by aumoon on February 26th, 2010

I'm calling all the current and future LASA students and parents for support on proposing a
change on the morning bus to LASA.....

The current school bus for LASA (0920, same bus going to Kealing)
comes at 6:51am and arrives at Kealing at 7:10am and then goes directly
to LASA arriving there at 7:30am. I might be wrong but I don't think any
of the LASA students from Mueller takes the morning bus to school.
The reason is obvious,:the bus is simply too early for LASA students.

I'm talking to the AISD transportation department hoping to persuade them
to change the route of this bus so that it comes back to Mueller after dropping
the students off at Kealing (a normal driving time is at most 15 mintues from Mueller to LASA).
Or better yet, have a separate bus for LASA students from Mueller.

The initial response I got back was that they are providing only one bus to both Kealing and
LASA for students from different neighborhoods in Austin and Mueller is no exception.

As far as I know, there will be more than 10 LASA students from Mueller next year and
the number will be increasing each year as we get more residents moving in.
We are carpooling in the morning now but isn't it great if we don't have to do that?

I was invited to have a meeting with the director to discuss this issue further.
I would like to hear from the LASA parents and students at Mueller on this issue.
You can PM me and let me know if you want the bus route to change. I can bring your
responses with me when I meet with the director.

Thank you in advance for your support!

The Maplewood bus is way too early also. We get up about the time the bus leaves the neighborhood. I would love to figure out how we could get a carpool van (or minibus) to take all the Mwood kids (and St. Georges too) in one vehicle.

I don't know anything about the kealing or LASA buses, but the Maplewood one has to get the kids there in time to eat breakfast. Also, I believe it moves on after dropping off our Maplewood kiddos to transport some other group to middle or high. Those are the two reasons I have been given for the Maplewood bus running so early in the morning.

Here's the way I figured the Maplewood one... The latest it could go would be around 7:15 to get the kids to the school on time (by 7:30). This would mean another 20 minutes or so of time in the morning to be spent at home either getting ready or sleeping. Also, you would have to have the kids eat breakfast at home (arrival would be too late to have bfast at school). For us the extra 20-25 minutes would be spent fixing/eating breakfast so it wouldn't really help the sleeping more issue. For us anyway. So, we walk to the bus stop in the morning in the semi dark :)

Walking School Bus
by doug on February 26th, 2010

How about a "walking school bus" (wsb)? Even if this could be done one day per week (walk on Wednesday or "wow"), it would serve to reduce motor vehicle traffic around the school and provide much-needed physical activity for children (and the adult wsb leader ;-)

Here's more info:

http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/guide/walking_school_bus/index.cfm

The walking distance from Wooten Park to Maplewood Elem. is less than 1 mi. It takes approx. 30 minutes for a wsb to walk one mi. Here's a route map:

Walking School Bus

We walked to Maplewood several times in the Fall Semester and would be up for doing it again this Spring. We leave about 7:15 to get there in time. Anyone interested?

OK...so the gist of it is, I have to get up earlier.
Yes, we should do the WSB. I saw one in action in Rome.
But we still need to work on the safer crossing of Airport.

I didn't see my first post on this topic in today's forum digest. Hopefully this reply will go out tomorrow to get some attention. Current and future LASA students and parents, please PM me
if you see my post soliciting for support on proposing a change on the current
morning bus departure time for LASA for next school year. If we want some changes, this is the time to take some action.
Thanks.
