Do any of you out there have kiddos in a youth soccer league? Is there a league that plays close by? I'd like to find a soccer league for my 5-year-old daughter but I don't really know where to start. Any recommendations?

Yipes! That's soon! Those dates are funny, January 18 is not a Friday. They either mean Friday the 15th or Monday the 18th. Looks like the field is way down south, but maybe we could get a team together with kids for our part of town? It would be nice to not have to travel too far for a practice.

There were some details missing from that web page. (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/parks/hancock.htm) I'm going to try to get over to the recreation center later tonight and ask some more questions. If I get some more information I'll post it here. It looks pretty good to me, though.

I just called up the Hancock Recreation Center and got a few things straightened out. What I was told was that Hancock runs their own soccer league and it will probably start up in March with registration opening up sometime in mid-February. I told him that the web page directs you to the Dittmar league which has dates that are earlier. The guy I was talking to didn't really know the reason for that, but he assured me that there will be a Hancock league that will start up a little later. They don't even have firm dates yet for the Hancock league yet beyond "starts in March". But I was told that the league will definitely happen, they've been doing it there for years. I think all the other details (6 week season, $55, etc.) still apply.

Thanks for the redirect Kim! I'll keep an eye on this and post here again if I learn more.

Thanks Ross! I was going to head over there today, but was curious about the Dittmar thing. We'll wait for the Hancock league too.

I did a little more poking around on the web and found University Hills Optimist. (http://www.uhosports.org/) Their web page is a little klunky and seems to focus on the older kids. But they do have programs for kids 4.5 years and up. I called their phone number to try to get more information and here's what I got:

* Registration is happening now. (not sure when it ends) It happens Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30pm-8pm at their field at 401 W St Johns.
* The fee for is $75
* I think they do most of the playing at those same fields.

I will probably go talk to them Thursday evening and try to find out more.

I did go out and try to talk to the folks at University Hills Optimist, but I must have gotten some stale info because I went to the field and nobody showed up. So I'm just going to wait for the program at Hancock to start up too.

I finally have an update. Registration for the Hancock rec center's youth soccer program is on now. It does NOT show up on the web page, so don't bother looking there! Here's the information, which I got from a flyer I picked up at the rec center:

Hancock Recreation Center Youth Soccer

Age Divisions:
* ages 5-6
* ages 7-9
* age 10-8th grade

Fee = $60 per player

Practices set on coach availability. Games played on Wednesdays and Thursdays and are scheduled to begin the week of March 22.

Registration Process
* Registration forms must be received by Hancock Recreation Center at the close of business on Friday, February 26. The forms may be mailed or dropped off at the center and must include payment. Forms without payment will not be included in the draft.
* Space in our league is limited and not everyone will be placed on a team.
* A random draw of all registrations received by February 26 will create the player pool.
* Players unable to be placed in the league will be notified by mail or E-mail and will be placed on a waiting list.
* Coaches will contact team members regarding practice dates and times.

Team Selection
* Hancock Recreation Center will be conducting a draft to place players on teams.
* The draft will take place on March 2.
* Hancock cannot accommodate requests for certain practice days, coach preference or team members.
* If a player is unable to participate after the draft, that player will be removed from the team roster and a player will be pulled from the waiting list.

Mail / drop off registration to:
Hancock Recreation Center
811 E. 41st Street
Austin, TX 78751
