Would love to get some nearby restuarant recommendations from those who have been in the neighborhood for a while. I have to stop driving back to the old 'hood for my favorite food fixes and find some new ones!
Especially missing good, relatively inexpensive, Chinese restaurant, that delivers optimally, to replace the Asian Market up off 183/Spicewood and a good Mexican, Tex Mex, place to replace our favorite Maudie's.
Couple restaurants we have found and really enjoy are East Side Pies for thin crust specialty pizzas, Madam Mams for spicy Thai.
Bring on the recommendations! Sounds like we definitely need to try Amaya's Taco Village up in Capitol Plaza.
We frequent El Chile's on Manor for Mexican food (not Tex Mex but true interior mexican food) which is awesome and for Tex-Mex, there is a Trudy's on 30th street close to the drag which is always a great choice. Of course for Miga's, you have to try Ciscos down on East 6th.
Hoover's is also pretty good for home cookin' meals. For a quick breakfast taco fix, try El Chilito's(owned by same folks who own El Chile) on Manor. It's a walk up and order place but does have some patio seating. They are also dog friendly if you want to join or avoid that experience.
We usually call Chinese food into the Pei Wei next to PokeJoe's over in Hancock, also a great BBQ if that interests you.
Unfortunately your closest thing to Asia Market (I have leftovers from there in my fridge right now) is Shanghai by Highland Mall. It's southern China style which means not the spiciness of Asia Market (Northern style). Janitzio's on MLK by campus. Their breakfast tacos are the best thing on the menu.
We use China Palace on Airport for take out. It's nothing special - standard American Chinese food - but good, inexpensive and large portions. I recently got a chicken fried rice and another standard menu item and ate from them for three days! And they deliver.
I should have added that all the places around Hyde Park Bar and Grill at 42nd and Duval are great: Asti's, Mother's, Julio's and Dolce Vita. We rediscovered Hyde Park Grill after moving to Mueller, and it's one of Austin's great places. Amazing how they've kept their prices so reasonable.
We'd be lucky to get 'branches' of all these restaurants at Mueller!
