Greg, I have left my keys in the mailbox twice and both times went to retrieve them there and some well-meaning folks had taken them. Have you considered leaving them there?

Yes, of course, I did consider that. But I also considered what might happen if I didn't secure them, and some less well-meaning person retrieved them before the owner realized they were gone.

Before taking them, I photographed them with my phone and posted it to the Mueller Neighbors Facebook page. I then went home to write a note to put on the mailbox. After I returned home again, I posted this message on the forum. I literally hit send at the exact same time the owner of the keys knocked on my door with the note in his hand. He seemed genuinely appreciative of my efforts.

Being a rather absent-present person myself, I can see myself in the same situation. I personally kind of like knowing I live in the kind of neighborhood where I know my neighbors have my back.

Good thinking about leaving a note on the mailbox!

I have done this twice. Please take my keys if/when I do it again.

I've also found keys left in the mailbox. Inside the box is the address, so I knew where to drop them off. I also knew that he'd be home because I had his car keys too.
