Transportation Committee meeting notes 21 May

I've had the same Berkman experience as Regina on several occasions. Besides the speed limit, there are also no passing stripes on that stretch. When you combine reckless drivers with carelessly parked cars sticking out into the traffic lanes, it's surprising there haven't been any accidents/fender benders (or have there?).

For those interested in various methods of traffic calming, read this from La Mesa, CA:

http://www.cityoflamesa.com/DocumentCenter/Home/View/1954

There's information on relative costs...but these might be local and/or outdated.

Transportation Committee Meeting notes
20 Aug 2014

Construction Update
-Continuing construction on Section 7 (East of Wildflower Terrace) and will deliver 1st phase to builders next month
-Greenway and neighborhood park - const starting next month
-Deliver 2nd phase lots to builders in December
includes widening Berkman to ZS
-Section 9 construction (Zach Scott to Philomena) start by end of year

Berkman Drive
-Several thanked Catellus for the action taken since the last committee meeting
-Several parking spaces removed on Berkman to improve sight distance
-Catellus held meeting with Berkman residents on June 18 and with the larger community on Aug. 14th.
-Hired consultant to look at roundabout and presented preliminary sketches at Aug. 14 meeting. He’s also advising on speed management/traffic calming.
-Catellus will post presentation online (and I will post link when Catellus provides it)
-Path forward:
—— Take feedback, look further at roundabouts and other devices
—— Pull together small working group to look at alternatives
—— Catellus will do survey to get additional community input
—— There are some time pressures since Berkman construction is underway, but Dee and Carl emphasized that construction now doesn’t preclude changes in the future.

Parking Traffic Management District (Jill)
— City economic development office has been meeting regularly to develop recommendations to Council. How to define and develop PTMD. Potential ordinance being drafted. Need to develop general policies/processes (revenue sharing rules, etc) before they can work on the specifics for a Mueller PTMD and a Mueller implementation plan.
— At the same time, they are coordinating on specific problem areas
—— Set up customer service loading/unloading area at Thinkery (on Simond). Parking restricted on alley as well.
—— Removed some parking spaces on Berkman to improve sight distance
—— No parking on ROW signs will be added along Airport from ZS to fire station (safety and fire hazard) - people need to use garage. Enforcement of new restrictions was discussed.

Mueller/Aldrich Roundabout
-City is working to obtain needed permits
-Contractor has to prepare cost estimate
-Plantings removed for work to begin, but construction may not start until late this year.

51st St. Vision Update
- Draft preliminary engineering report is undergoing internal review
- Once updated, City will begin public process:
—- meet with adjoining owners
—- re-engage working group
—- open house
- Still looks like the vision plan will be possible given all other constraints
- City stated that money for both design and construction was included in the 2012 bond package.

Update Items
— Traffic Signals - late Sept for signal installation at 51st/Mueller
— Airport Blvd Bike/ped crossings - no update available
— Capital Metro routes - nothing in the immediate future regarding route changes through Mueller. Prior presentations to PIAC mentioned possible rerouting of one route (don’t know what number) to come through Mueller via Berkman.
