You were probably walking down my street (Hargis). There are 3 Applewhites that are the same elevation and all three the same color. One of these houses is mine - and yes I complained about them all three being the same color. Only one of these three houses are affordable. One thing Meritage is doing that David Weekley did not is that the floor plan is open for the regular market. The difference is that the inside is finished out differently. So as far as Affordable in phase 2 you can't tell from the outside which house is affordable and who is not.
I am going through the color change authorization as we speak so hopefully there will not be 3 Applewhites with the same elevation and same color so close together. We were told that this was a mistake by the developers, but they couldn't change it...go figure!
As far as the weird floorplan...It actually works well if you move the laundry into the oversized garage.

I have an affordable Applewhite. I put a 42 inch diameter round table with 4 swivel chairs in the kitchen. It's kinda tight when all 4 chairs are occupied, but otherwise I don't seem to have a problem. There is room for all the doors to open and to get around the table without being an Olympic hurdler. Everything that would collect on an island just ends up on the table instead.

The wierdest thing to me about the whole house is that there are no real windows in the kitchen. One thing Meritage did to cut costs on the affordables was to put in less expensive doors. That means solid exterior doors - no glass. There is only one small window in the kitchen above the back door. It makes the kitchen very dark and cave-like and it means I can't see my backyard from anywhere inside my house! Fortunately, it's something that can be easily changed and just today I had my carpenter here taking measurements for a new glass door.

I've thought about doing this eventually. I'm glad to know someone else has actually done it and it works well.

I'm in an affordable Applewhite, too, and am looking for a good dining table. I have hopes of seating more than 4 people - Ikea has a white round one with a leaf insert - but with meriimp's description that might be a little cramped when expanded. I also considered moving the laundry. I can't believe Meritage didn't. Was it pretty easy to do? Moving the vent and water hookup seems costly, at least I'd have to hire a professional. I wish it could be a DIY project.

I would love to get a glass door for my Meritage home as well. The kitchen is the only place in the house that doesn't get natural light through windows. Can you tell me where you plan to get your glass door?

I also have the affordable Hubbard/Applewhite. The kitchen was too dark for my liking as well. I have all ready swapped out the back door and it has made a huge difference! I purchased a half glass type with frosted and cut glass. I wanted to let all the light in, but keep my privacy too. I saw them at Home Depot for $250.00 but my carpenter purchased it at "Stock Lumber" off Burleson for much cheaper. Your welcome to come by Camacho and take a look at it. kat
