Happy Friday!
My family and I live on the perimeter of Ella Wooten Park. We love the location, but need help addressing the noise factor after 9pm on the basketball court. Typically most games are wrapped up by dusk, but on a few occasions, several young men (who do not live in the neighborhood) have elected to play until the park closes at 10pm. During the summer this is not an issue. However, during the school year, the sound of the basketball on the court (along with the noise from the game) can be heard in my son's bedroom and is prolonging his bedtime (not that he would complain).
We thought if we just approached the kids on the court and explained the situation they would understand and wrap up their game within a few minutes and leave. Unfortunately, that was not the case. One of the boys made it clear that he was no longer in school and could care less who was disturbed by the noise. He then proceeded to make a quick call and within 5-8 minutes, another fine young man appeared. He grabbed a ball, stood in the middle of the court and just bounced it over and over again.
We are not sure how to proceed. Technically they have every right to play until 10pm, but the noise is proving to be a bit much for us at bedtime. We welcome any suggestions the community has for resolving this issue (should it continue).
Thanks.

I hate to hear that. I wonder how would we get in touch with that boys Mom?! (I realize he is older, but that doesn't mean his Mom wouldn't make him behave). There is a basketball court at Patterson, although not as nice and unfortunately it sounds like they may not be amenable to moving. I've got no good ideas, but I'm feeling for ya and wonder what other solutions people have.

Put on workout clothes. Go out there with your own basketball and dribble around non-stop, in circles around them if they ate just standing still, and in the way if they are actually playing. Say things over and over again like, "You got game?" or "Pass me the rock!" - anything to interrupt and make it into a farce.

Or maybe you could just put one of these or drape a sound blanket on the window(s) facing the court.

Or petition for a earlier closing during school days?(I'll sign). Or wait until daylight savings occurs, and then it will be too dark to play?

Have you considered earplugs. They are amazing!

We have had the same problem. I am in favor of the BB court closing at 9pm year round. There is enough lighting that darkness isn't a deterrent.

We also live across from the park, and we haven't had any issues with noise from the basketball court.

Well smittyhoo, I think I'll leave the bball skills up to you. These guys didn't seem like the type to share our sense of humor. However, the drape or sound blanket maybe worth looking into- thanks for the idea.

We can live with a few occasional games going on past 9pm, but what really concerns me is the confrontational attitude these young men took when approached about the issue. That said, I am more inclined to agree with Betsy and mbe about changing the basketball court hours from 5am-9pm during the school year.
Thank you for reaching out and sharing ideas

I thought the placement of the basketball court there was a mistake - I purposely didn't buy a house next to Wooten Park because of this issue. In the short run, I'd favor earlier closing times for the court and disabling the lights. The homeowners nearby might also investigate better windows and other sound-proofing methods for their home.

In the long run, we might look at replacing the court with something more attuned to younger children. The current play area will be much too small once the rest of the southern part of Mueller gets built out.
