I am thinking about purchasing a manual reel mower but would like to make sure that I'm ready for the change. Before I spend the money, would someone be willing to let me borrow theirs so that I could try it on my small lawn?

I have one. It's the smaller Scott's model from Home Depot. The biggest problem is, it will catch on every bit of mulch or twig in the yard & stop cold. Once you get past that, it works pretty well. I still had to invest in a weedeater/edger - but I have a corner lot to mow.

Thanks - I bit the bullet and bought a 20" Scotts off CL for $60. It's okay but I find that it misses clumps at a time. Maybe I just need to sharpen it.

You may need to adjust the height setting. I also have patches of lawn I have to hit in several directions to get an even result.

Don't let the grass get too tall or it's tough to mow. If it's too tall, I have to hit it with the weed eater.

And, like Jillian, I have to go back and forth over some of it to get it even. It doesn't suck the grass up like a gas mower, so it doesn't cut it evenly. Picture the silly razor commercials where it makes the whisker stand up. Same premise occurs with the suction of a gas mower.

You get used to it. I mow more often than I weedeat. It's a quick run.
